A filling line is a chain of dependent processes. Water treatment, product preparation, container handling, filling, closure, inspection, labelling, secondary packaging, palletising and utilities must work at the same operating rhythm. Selecting each unit by its headline speed is not enough.
Define every product and package
List the beverage type, viscosity, carbonation, pulp or particulates, temperature, shelf-life method and cleaning sensitivity. Add each bottle, can, carton or pouch format; container material; volume; neck or closure; label; multipack and pallet configuration. Identify which formats must run on day one and which are future options.
Use real output, not nominal speed
State the required saleable output by format and shift. Include expected efficiency, planned stops, product change, container change, cleaning and quality losses. A balanced line should be assessed at the constraint, with accumulation and control logic designed around realistic stoppages.
Set the hygiene and cleaning boundary
Clarify whether the process is hot-fill, cold-fill, aseptic or another controlled route; the required product-contact materials; cleaning-in-place philosophy; sterilisation; water quality; microbiological controls and documentation. The correct answer depends on product risk and the target market, not on a generic “food grade” statement.
Map the factory interfaces
- Raw and treated water, product ingredients and preparation tanks.
- Electric power, steam, compressed air, cooling, drainage and ventilation.
- Floor loading, clear height, access, operator routes and maintenance space.
- Upstream container supply and downstream warehouse flow.
- Existing machines, data systems and production-reporting interfaces.
Design changeover before buying flexibility
More formats can increase commercial flexibility while also adding tooling, cleaning, operator work, storage and lost production time. Request a change-part list, changeover procedure, target duration and the conditions under which that target is measured.
Write the acceptance test around sellable product
Factory and site acceptance should define the product, package, duration, input quality, output, reject rate, fill accuracy, closure performance, hygiene checks, energy conditions and permitted interruptions. Confirm who supplies test materials and what happens if site utilities differ from design values.
